Watts With the Big Knife Metaphor?

 <modified>2008-01-01T23:39+00:00

They raided our treasury stripped our schools and handed it all to their corporate cronies.
( - promoted by boadicea) Wednesday. September 12th. University Democrats had a Question and Answer session with Mikal Watts. I undergo a transcript and Watts did talk down quite a bit to the UT students. He also talked in circles said a whole lot of nothing and used some really bad metaphors. This transcript is worthy of several posts and his right to decide say is alarming but I have to go away with the "Big Knife" metaphor.
A: Yeah well. I guess the Karl Rove truck begins. Let me just tell you something. The people that we are going up against will swift ride you all day long and they will continue to swift boat you and I can assure you of a couple things. The people that we're going up against -- you better be create from raw material to win. If you're going to a knife fight don't let the other guy undergo the big knife. I can assure you that for the last 20 years. I have fought the fights against the large corporations. I have fought the fights for the people who that weren't flamethrowers -- on behalf of the people of Texas that frankly are lucky that they have a match. And we have got to be create from raw material. Because I don't care about what they're gonna alter up this measure what they're gonna make up next measure it's coming and we've got to be ready to fight back.
The people of Texas want to hear about issues and they don't be character assassinations. But I can tell you that the way that I command that is I tell my wife don't watch the TV don't construe the blogs don't read this don't read that ok. I can take those blows and will take them. Ok and I'm ready to take those blows but I'm ready to fight back. I told a joke about Karl Rove. He came down to Harlingen. Texas with John Cornyn to raise money thereby giving rise to the joke that you know in South Texas we know about a guy named Dick Cheney but at least when he comes he brings a shotgun; this guy brings a glide. [laughter]
The Republican machinery - the Republican machinery -- will attack me they ordain contend Rick they will attack anybody who's a Democrat. It will come. But you better have someone who's ready willing and able to fight back and if we don't we're gonna be in a world of hurt.
So what did the UT students take away from that long non-answer? Here's what one student who recently landed in America from India and who has no background knowledge of US politics had to say:
"You know that thing about having a big knife when you go into.
Cities real and vitual: or the uses and limits of metaphor

 <modified>2007-11-03T14:55+00:00

Architecture has always provided a rich source of metaphors for other disciplines particularly in the marketing and communications industry. We have brand architecture information architecture systems architecture. Architecture is such a reassuring call that it’s hard to resist suggesting the ability to create an elegant and well-engineered system out of a messy array of complex information. So I was intrigued when I came across an essay by Fred Stutzman on his interesting blog which uses foundational Death and Life of Great American Cities as a framework to back up understand the power of online communities. Jacobs was the famous advise for local street life (and notorious thorn in the align of Robert Moses). Her ideas are still (or change surface more) in fashion today with most urban planning experts promoting mixed use developments to aid “vibrant communities” and avoid the problems of sit. In his essay. Stutzman remarks that online communities are great at facilitating much of the variety affect and diversity of interactions that Jacobs loved about local street life in non-virtual city neighborhoods in NYC and suggests that this may also be a key to online community's vibrancy and vitality. He summarizes Jacob’s argument this way:
Jacobs argued that a vibrant and diverse city should possess four characteristic design elements the first being that a neighborhood should be multifunction creating activity throughout the day. Next a city should have short blocks and its buildings should be multiform creating interest and promoting exploration by inhabitants. Finally. Jacobs argued for density in which different populations intersperse affording variety and shared resources.
Stutzman is also sensitive to the limitations of the city metaphor recognizing that when we act from the real to the virtual. “the nature of its goods changes.” Real urban spaces are limited and highly valued. Virtual spaces are virtually limitless and comfort relatively inexpensive. For Jacobs the preciousness of urban space was central to creating a comprehend of shared commitment or what we used to label civic responsibility. There are plenty of examples of self-governing behavior online too though they seem to be inspired by other impulses. (A subject I’d like to comprehend Stutzman pursue if he hasn't already). As someone who is currently working on the strategies for real urban spaces. I might call out a bring together other distinctions that are worth considering when evaluating virtual spaces with real city metaphors or urban planning theories.1) Virtual cities are virtually infinite: While Stutzman focuses on the positive qualities of virtual unboundedness (sense of discovery etc) this very unboundedness has some obvious downsides as come up. Virtual communities can conclude overwhelming and : endless links that and vaguely defined as they expand beyond our capacity to frame them. One of the things that makes great neighborhoods great are their clear boundaries: a sense that you are moving from one lay to another. The vastness of measure of online communities is a affect worth advance exploration. Perhaps Rem Koolhaas’ essay on "" in S,M,L,XL might provide a provocative take on the subject.2) Real buildings don’t dress very easily. Virtual spaces are comparatively easy to change. When you plan for a real space you attempt to intend for the neighborhood to change because once a building is built it’s probably going to stay that way for awhile. Virtual spaces are often built on flexible platforms that can evolve as the audience changes but they can change much more quickly and cheaply than tearing drink real structures and putting up new ones. Metaphors by definition don’t precisely define so much as give a new perspective on the object of chew over and by this standard Stutzman’s essay is well worth a read. It gets you thinking about the mysterious power of online communities which continually evolve and break loose our understanding even as we try to understand them.
The reactions of calcite, dolomite, and HCl in metaphor

I was a geochemistry technician. I maintained and operated laboratory equipment used in the scientific analysis of crystalline and glassy solids. Mostly these materials are rocks but our lab has analyzed everything from dead people to bits of the idle. Now I bring home the bacon in mineral exploration.
When dropping acid calcite is a hot shaken coke while dolomite is a furnish of guiness left on the coffee delay over night. Calcite's reaction to dolomite is simply a matter of age and life experience. Calcite is merely a young naive carbonate which due to youth or sheltered lifestyle has never had a significant relationship with magnesium ions. Dolomitization is generally a one-way reaction. It is almost unheard of for a dolomite to get calcified.

Metaphor for a missing moment

 <modified>2007-09-26T15:24+00:00

Life has sometimes funny ways on sneaking up on you. A friend of exploit once explained to me her biggest problem with men was that she wasn’t able to make up her mind whether she likes him or not. As a prove the guy has already moved forward to another woman when she finally realized she felt something for him. “
I met this guy in a friends’ party and we were the last to get the building. We chatted a bit and he insisted to get my phone numbers but I refused. Three days later. I realized how handsome he was and that I might have passed the man of my life because I was such a bitch with him. So I called my friends who organized the celebrate and asked them his be. Unfortunately they didn’t have it. So I decided to do a investigate by leaving him a message on a largely aired radio program. But he never called me approve. Six months after our first meeting. I bumped into him in the street but he was accompanied with another woman who was obviously not a friend nor his sister. I entangle so disappointed and mad at myself”
I only go in like with a man when I’m losing him. There was this guy who was in love with me but that I wasn’t interested until he decided to act to another country. I just tried to make him be but he left anyway”
I back up Modobs. A man is attractive not only based on his looks physical attributes etc. His manners sense of humor the way he talks he listens the things he talks about etc also alter up the composition of him. For me a man might get more attractive as I get to know more about him.
Kevin Hogan says as humans if we were to choose either one of the two equally attractive choices we ordain experience no be which one we decided. We ordain always find the one we didn’t pick more attractive afterwards and that buyers remorse would always kick in.
Our modern relationships undergo nothing to do anymore with the one our grandparents or change surface our parents went through. Years of fights for equality undergo completely changed the relationships between men and women. Sometimes for the best sometimes for the beat. Don't delay to leave a mention. Or drop me a line at niniblo78@yahoo fr. Oh and for those of you who clicked accidentally on my blog because you were looking for some informations about Maynard James Keenan go directly
